Mardan High School Program
The Mardan High School program, grades 9th through 12th, utilizes similar resources and strategies as in the younger grades (see Elementary/Middle School Program), but emphasizes developing the skills and strategies that will enable students to be successful as they grow into young adults. The program is designed for diploma-tracked students who may need a smaller, supported environment in order to achieve graduation requirements.
Mardan is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), and students attending high school at Mardan can achieve a diploma through our school as a private student, or from their district home school if district-placed. Our high school students have an individualized education plan with goals and objectives, as well as a high school course plan, to ensure social, emotional, and academic needs are addressed while fulfilling necessary requirements to prepare for graduation.
Concurrent with academic instruction, the students learn organization skills, study skills, social communication skills, problem-solving and coping skills. High school classes are somewhat departmentalized, but each student is assigned to a specific core teacher with whom they have: 1) homeroom, 2) one of the major core instructional blocks (English/History or Math/Science), 3) potentially an elective class, and 4) end-of-day wrap-up with social skills group. The core teacher becomes responsible for coordinating with all the student's other teachers, and working together to develop, monitor, and support the student's goals.
Class sizes remain small (maximum of 12 students), and are taught by credentialed teachers along with a full-time assistant teacher who works as a team with each teacher. Academic remediation and supports are provided for those who need it, as well as differentiation of instruction to best meet students' unique learning needs. As a small, specialized school, we do our best to access resources that provide a wider range of core and elective courses, including online college-prep and Advanced Placement courses through the University of California Learning Campus and the National Repository of Online Courses (NROC).
